Briar Face Masks

Briar Face Masks

Usually, we make bonnets (but you already knew that). Masks are not something that has been in our repertoire! But we saw the dire need in our communities, and knew we had the capability to make them. So we created a beautiful, thoughtfully designed mask that’s effective at keeping you safe.*

Please keep in mind that masks are *not* foolproof, and that the best way to prevent the spread of COVID-19 is to stay home, if possible. Our hope is to help you protect yourself and others when you need to go out in public, while ensuring that frontline healthcare professionals have the medical-grade equipment they need. Let’s work together to slow the spread!

Our masks are the quality you expect, with a healthy dose of protection.

Our masks are made from one of our favorite fabrics: highest-quality, tightly-woven 100% cotton from Liberty of London. Liberty cotton is smooth and comfortable against your skin - and features the prettiest prints (because we could all use an extra dose of cheer right now!). Our masks feature adjustable ties, and are contoured for a close-to-the-face fit for comfort and protection. Each mask is machine washable and has a pocket for a replaceable filter for maximum effectiveness* (see recommendations below).

*These are not direct substitutes for N95, surgical, or procedural masks and are not FDA approved. Masks are final sale, and returns will not be accepted for sanitary reasons. Discounts do not apply.

In sizes for (almost) the whole family.

Our masks are available in 3 sizes: Child, Adult Small/Medium, and Adult Medium/Large.  The child-size fits children roughly between the ages of 3-8 [please note that the CDC recommends children under 2 should not wear a mask]; see the measurements of each size below.

We’re always up for a challenge, and we’re thrilled that our nimble team could pivot toward best serving our community during this historic time. Right now, that means we’re working hard to meet the demand for our masks.

Stay up to date on our Instagram and Facebook pages for continuing mask restocks!

How to wear and care for your mask.

HOW TO WASH

Masks should be washed between each use.

Machine wash in hot water; tumble dry. Ensure mask is completely dry before you wear it. Warm iron if needed.

FILTERS

Replaceable filters offer an additional layer of protection, and while the mask doesn't include a filter, they’re easy to make yourself using our printable template.

Filters may be made of common household items; HEPA filters (made for vacuum cleaners, air purifiers, and air conditioners), and polypropylene fabric (such as landscape fabric) are ideal options, but vacuum cleaner bags*, coffee filters, or felt can be substituted when necessary. *For your safety, please ensure that your vacuum cleaner bag does not contain fiberglass before using as a filter.

Insert your filter through the side pocket, and use fingers to gently open the filter and smooth inside the mask. Filters should only be used one time and disposed of immediately.

This article provides additional information on filter materials, which you may find helpful.

HOW TO PROPERLY USE YOUR MASK

How to Put the Mask On

  1. Wash your hands with soap and water for at least 20 seconds. Dry your hands.
  2. Make sure the exterior side of the mask is facing out, away from your face.
  3. Pick up the mask by the ties and tie the upper ties behind your head with a bow.
  4. Once the mask is fitted to the bridge of your nose, tie the lower ties behind your head with a bow.
  5. Make sure the mask is completely secure, and that it covers your nose and mouth so that the bottom edge is under your chin.
  6. Wash your hands.

*For additional protection, use double-sided tape to adhere to secure mask firmly at the sides of the nose, ensuring air flows through the mask and not around the edges.

Removing the Mask

  1. Wash your hands before removing the mask.
  2. Do not touch your eyes, nose, or mouth when removing the mask.
  3. Untie the bottom tie.
  4. Untie the top tie and, holding the top ties, slowly pull the mask away from your face as the ties are loosened.
  5. Remove the filter and dispose of it immediately.
  6. Place the mask in the washing machine.
  7. Wash your hands.
