DIY Garden Butterfly Puddlers

DIY Garden Butterfly Puddlers

Are you looking for a fun and engaging activity to do with your kids? Why not try making DIY Butterfly Puddlers using simple materials like terracotta pots, paint, craft glue, and a sponge? Not only is this a great way to spend quality time with your little ones, but it also provides a wonderful opportunity to observe and attract beautiful butterflies to your garden.

What You'll Need:

To get started on this creative project, gather the following materials:

  • Small terracotta pot + saucer
  • Acrylic paint in various colors
  • Craft glue
  • Sponge

Step-by-Step Instructions:

Follow these simple steps to create your own DIY Butterfly Puddlers:

Step 1: Paint the Pots

Start by helping your little ones paint the terracotta pots in vibrant colors. Let their creativity shine as they decorate the pots with different patterns and designs. Allow the paint to dry completely before moving on to the next step.

Note: Do not paint the inside of the saucer as this is where we will place the butterflies' nectar.

Step 2: Attach the top

Apply a liberal amount of glue to the bottom of the pot. Next, place the saucer (with the lip of the saucer facing up) onto the glue. Press the saucer in place, to ensure a good seal is created. Let the glue dry and fully adhere before moving it around.

Step 3: Make your "nectar"

Mix ¼ cup sugar with 1 cup of water. Mix well until the sugar is dissolved. If you wish you can heat the water first to make the sugar dissolve quicker, just be sure to let it completely cool before adding it to the feeder. The sponge will act as a source of moisture for the butterflies, providing them with a place to drink and rest.

Note: For this project make sure you are using a brand new sponge. You don’t want to risk using a used sponge that may have bacteria in it, as it could be harmful to the butterflies.

Step 4: Place in the Garden

Once the glue has dried, place your DIY Butterfly Puddlers in your garden or outdoor space. Make sure to position them in a sunny spot where butterflies are likely to visit. Don't forget to wear your Garden Bonnet while you're watching for these beautiful creatures!

By creating these Butterfly Puddlers, you not only provide a welcoming environment for butterflies but also add a touch of color and whimsy to your outdoor space. Get ready to enjoy the beauty of nature right in your own backyard!
