6 Things to Bring to a Friend Who Just Had a Baby

Moms have a certain superpower when it comes to knowing just what people need at the exact right moment. So when a friend or relative welcomes a new baby to the world, you already know the roller-coaster emotions and out-of-body experience they’re in the trenches of. Most people want to shower the new parents with gifts and offers to snuggle the baby, but how can you really help a new family? Before you head to the baby clothing aisle at Target, here are a few tried-and-true ideas that any new mama will love.

1. Snacks on snacks on snacks.

I’ve had friends that showed up with that trusty Trader Joe’s bag filled to the brim each time I brought home one of my babies. They know if they had texted me to ask what they could get me at the store I would have either declined out of politeness or asked for essentials. But bringing snacks that are salty, sweet and easy to eat with one hand is such a game-changer with a newborn. Mama will be so grateful for easy access to trail mix, protein bars and dried fruit during those late night feedings.

And don’t forget the breakfast items! A lot of people offer to drop off lunches or dinners, but breakfast often gets overlooked for hangry new parents. They’re likely exhausted and starving from a long, sleepless night, so it’s excellent to provide something tasty and nutritious they can eat first thing in the morning. Homemade granola, Greek yogurt, frittata, quiche, muffins, banana bread, bagels, and breakfast burritos are all great options here.

2. Hydration station

Hydration is an often-overlooked part of feeding new parents, but it’s an essential for nursing moms. Smoothies, fresh-squeezed juice, lemonade, and sparkling water would all be delicious drinks to bring a new mom. Anyone who brought me cold brew when I was home with my newborn was an instant best friend. You can also bring hydrating items like lotions and lip balms to help that new mama feel a little more human again.

3. Diapers and wipes

Ask mom or her partner what diapers and wipes they prefer and pick some up before heading over. A newborn can never have enough diapers! Opt for a size 1 or 2 to be safe, as baby will quickly grow out of newborn diapers. Bonus points if you change a dirty diaper or two while you visit.

4. Postpartum essentials

Healing from birth is no joke, and it requires a variety of items, some of which can quickly run out. Bring over postpartum must-haves like nipple cream and nursing pads or a donut pillow and perineal spray to help mom feel taken care of. Pay close attention to the different delivery types—vaginal or cesarean—and which corresponding items will help mom feel supported.

5. Easy self-care items

It’s hard to feel like yourself in those early days postpartum. Bring over a low-key self-care basket that will help mama take care of herself in between feedings. Cooling under eye gels, dry shampoo and a fresh pair of leggings can make all the difference when you are feeling grimy and exhausted.

6. Fresh flowers

Flowers instantly brighten up any space! Even if mama has a fussy babe who demands every ounce of her energy, at least a fresh bouquet will give her something beautiful to look at while she’s continually bouncing and swaying.
